Lung Health Tips

With all the wildfires in Colorado it may be tough for some of us to avoid breathing smoke. In the event this happens, here are some tips from ehow.com on how minimize the damaging effects.

Consume large amounts of warm fluids to stimulate the cilia in the chest to beat upwards and drive the smoke byproducts from the lungs into the throat.

Use a benzalkonium and mercury-free nasal moistener spray.

Wash your nasal passages and sinuses with a saline solution of a half teaspoon of salt, a quarter teaspoon of baking soda, and 8 ounces of water. Sniff the mixture in and out of the nose until the liquid coming out is clear.

Do not take allergy antihistamines as they dry sinuses and lessen the ability of the cilia to reject the smoke byproducts.

Keep home and car windows closed to lessen the impact of the fire and smoke.

If forced to go out in heavy smoke conditions, breathe through a wet mask.

No one wants to be forced to modify their schedule, but it’s better to take a day off from training than to subject your lungs to additional stress.

Our best wishes go out to the firefighters and other workers who have no option other than work in these conditions to keep the rest of us safe.
